St. Francis, born Giovanni di Pietro Bernardone, is one of the most adored religious figures in history. Born into a wealthy Italian family during the medieval period, he renounced his wealth. He became a monk and sought the solitude of the forest and streams as a means of finding his true calling. He became the patron saint of animals; and the natural environment. He was known to preach to both man and animals, and he felt that all creatures of God had a duty to praise their creator; and vice versa, man had the duty to both enjoy and protect nature.
